Raas Lila The Dance of Krishna and the Gopis
A very important event in the history of mankind took place five thousand years ago on the full moon night of Kartik Purnima in Vrindavan the town where krishna spent his famous childhood. This event is recorded in the Srimad Bhaagvad where it is described as the Raas Lila of Krishna with the gopis and Radha. Raas literally means juice and this event depicted the raas or juice of life which is joy and bliss. On that night Krishna who was one, while dancing with the gopis who were many, multiplied himself into infinity so that each gopi had a Krishna to dance with. This was no ordinary dance. It was the dance of creation where the one Purusha dances with the manifold Prakriti to instigate the process of creation. In physics this same process is called the field whereby consciousness is all pervading in each and every speck of existence. There is no place where that all pervading reality who is none other than Krishna is not present. This was the experience that Krishna gifted on a platter to the gopis of Vrindavan, the chief of them being named Radha. They had no life other than Krishna, they had no mind other than the one immersed in Krishna, their hearts yearned for Krishna all day and night, while they ate, worked, played or slept. This complete unity with Krishna on all levels whether it be physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual, led to this experience. They beheld the Viraat or cosmic form of Krishna! This event was so enriching that the true devotees of Krishna can witness this scene even today at midnight on Kartik Purnima when that grove comes alive with the cosmic dance of creation enacted thousands of years ago. This sacred moment is celebrated each year at Rikhia Peeth on Kartik Purnima so that devotes can offer their love and devotion to one of the greatest figures to appear on this earth, Lord Krishna. The famous kathakaars or storytellers of Vrindavan are called specially to narrate and glorify this event in their own inimitable style! |
