Sivananda Janmotsav Srimad Bhagwat, which narrates the life of Sri Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu, is essentially a treatise on bhakti and vairagya. Considered the most holy and sacred of all scriptures, this text is most popular for its rich heritage of stories of one of Indias most beloved heroes, the Lord Krishna. These stories are narrated by kathakars or storytellers as well as by sannyasins throughout the length and breadth of India. It is considered most auspicious to narrate this story in remembrance of one's bereaved and departed ancestors and loved ones. It is said that after compiling the four Vedas, eighteen mahapuranas and itihisas, the sage Vyasa was still dissatisfied and restless as if there was still something he had to do. To cure this restlessness Narada advised him to write about the episodes of Krishna's life as being his contemporary Vyasa knew him rather well. This gave him the greatest fulfilment, because to hear and tell the stories of Krishna enriches the body, mind and soul. Each year during the Sivananda Janmotsav celebrations in September (1-8) Bhagwat Katha is conducted at Rikhia Peeth by eminent sannyasins, in memory of our Paramaguru Sri Swami Sivananda Saraswati.
