Sat Chandi Yajna
Yajna for the New Millennium

To celebrate Sita Kalyanam in the year 2000 a Sat Chandi Yajna will be conducted at Paramhansa Alakh Bara Rikhia. The wise and learned ones have advised that the auspicious dates for this event are from 26th November to 1st December. The Sita Kalyanam celebrations will start from 23rd November and on the three days prior to the yajna there will be chanting of the Ramayan, singing of Naam Sankirtan and Satsang.

The possibilities that have opened before us in the new millennium are immense. Perhaps you are the sort of person that doesn't give much thought to the world around you, even so it would do you well to ponder a while on the events that are shaping it.

Intellectually mankind has taken a big stride ahead. This has given birth to a host of new ideas and systems. Out of these perhaps the one idea that will radically affect our lives is globalisation. The world is getting smaller. In terms of accessibility, communication and the exchange of ideas, the whole world now appears as one nation. You can no longer say that what happens half way across the world across several time zones does not affect your life. It does in more ways than one. Even the air you breathe and the water you drink has become global. This whiff of globalisation has blown from the West and enticed nations throughout the world affecting their economy, their ecology, their politics, their lifestyle and even their mind set.

How and when did this happen? I think we can all agree on the fact that we owe all this to one small machine called a computer. The numerous achievements of the 21st century man are indeed outstanding and merit applause but the one for which he deserves a standing ovation is the computer; the machine which has revolutionised his life. This little machine which is already directing missiles and satellites is going to design and direct the human mind. It will frame the very concepts on which our lives will be based.

Yes, the intellectual IQ of man in this the 21st century is indeed commendable. But alas! In spite of the dynamic growth of his intellect, his emotional IQ still stands crippled and immature. On account of which although the possibilities in this millennium are immense, so too are the problems. These problems will be more acute in the developed nations, those who are recognised as the intellectual giants of today.

In every part of the world we see disharmony, discontent and conflict. Despite all these sophisticated tools which man has created out of his intellect, instead of progress he is moving towards intolerance and disharmony. He is not able to live with his fellow beings. His happiness is short-lived and his satisfaction temporary. There are disputes over land, over religion, over race, over tribe, over women and wealth. And yet we dare to call ourselves a civilised society.
