Bhuj Report

On 26th January 2001 much of Gujarat was affected by a devastating earthquake in which thousands of people died and thousands of buildings were destroyed. The most seriously affected areas were Bhuj, Bachau and Anjar.

Hundreds of small children became orphans, losing both their parents and their home. The Government and various voluntary organizations have been working to help those who survived the shock.

Sivananda Math, a social and charitable organization established by Swami Satyananda in 1984, has undertaken to alleviate the suffering in Gujarat, especially the orphaned children of Bhuj and nearby areas.
The Math has established Sivananda Balakashram (Sivananda Children's Home) on a ten acre plot at the foot of the panoramic Tapkeshwari Hills, three kilometres from Bhuj.

The Balakashram will eventually house and maintain 400 children aged between 10 and 14 years, and care for their all round development - physical, educational, social and spiritual. The children will be accommodated in the ashram, and further education will be arranged to whatever stage required, according to aptitude. The ashram will also endeavour to assist the children to become established in life. They will be free to go wherever they choose after reaching an age to make mature personal decisions.

During the Guru Poornima celebration at Bhuj-Kutch from 29th June to 2nd July 2004, Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati inaugurated the Sivananda Balakashram project.
