Report of Activities 1998

1998

During 1998 Sivananda Math commenced construction of the three storey hospital, Amrit Kalash, at the village of Amarva. It has a dispensary and provides hospital rooms for those patients who need post-operative care and supervision. During the year, free medical treatment was provided on a daily basis for the local village people, and 12,000 patients were examined and treated on an out-patient basis. The full treatment of 250 TB patients was also undertaken.

Sivananda Math also began construction of a house in the village of Rangamore, as well as the painting and renovation of two village mandirs: Baba Mandir at Harla Jori and Kali Mandir at Amarva.

From February 1998 through to March 1999 Sivananda Math initiated a project for the rehabilitation, education, upliftment and financial aid of underprivileged village widows. During this period, 24 widows spent 4 hours daily in the Akhara premises, attending classes on mantra chanting and reading and writing in Hindi.

From February to May, English classes were held in the Akhara premises for 20 village girls. All the girls were presented with stationery, school bags, school uniforms, toys, games, books, clothing and accessories. From May to July, Hindi classes were held for 12 village ladies, who received Ramayana books, sari sets, cosmetics and accessories. From November 1998 to February 1999, weaving classes were held for 24 village ladies. After completing their training in weaving the ladies were presented with weaving frames and large amounts of wool.

Stationery, notebooks, school uniforms, art materials, pencil cases, school bags, games, toys, text books, dictionaries, books for school libraries etc. were distributed to the students of Rikhia Middle School, Amarva, Dev Sang School, Deoghar and Nawadih Middle School, Nawadih. All teachers were presented with blankets, umbrellas, diaries, calendars, notebooks, stationery, Bihar School of Yoga publications and clothing.

Sivananda Math awarded a scholarship and course books to Badal Kumar Raut, S/o Vasudev Raut, Vill. Lorhia, Panchayat Rikhia Modern Public School, Deoghar.

During August, on the sacred occasion of Lord Krishna's birthday, thousands of villagers were invited to participate in the Krishna Jhulan program held at the Akhara. Artists from India and around the world were invited to perform kirtans, bhajans and devotional songs to celebrate Lord Krishna's descent in the form of an Avatar. Truckloads of prasad (sweets and fruits) were distributed to each participant. Hundreds of families were invited for prasad meals during and after the program. Artists, villagers and guests were presented with prasad in the form of clothing, kitchen utensils, spiritual literature, yantras, malas, toys etc.
