Guru Poornima at Bhuj 2004

Swami Niranjan visited Bhuj, (Kacch) Gujarat, from 26th June to 3rd July 2004 to celebrate Guru Poornima and to inaugurate the newly constructed Sivananda Balak Ashram. Founded by Sivananda Math, the ashram has 21 residents, boys aged 8-14 years. The ashram will provide an opportunity for boys from Bhuj, severely affected by the devastating earthquake of 2001, to grow and develop in a traditional ashram environment, exposed to a yogic lifestyle, while simultaneously pursuing their academic studies.

On 26th Swamiji took the 21 boys to Ma Tapakeshwari temple, where they chanted the 32 names of Durga and Hanuman Chalisa. They then trekked to the top of the surrounding hills, and became close as if they had known him a long time. On 27th Swamiji performed Rudrabhishek in Paramahamsa Jyoti. He then presented the boys with their ashram uniforms. On 28th and 29th Swamiji conducted havan in the administrative building and between the two hostels, Dhruva and Prahlad. On 29th evening Swamiji also took the boys to visit the local City Park.

In the evening Swamiji gave satsang explaining the aim of Sivananda Balak Ashram. Kachchi artists gave a musical performance, followed by dance from the boys, who also sang a bhajan. Morning asana and pranayama and afternoon yoga nidra and meditation classes were conducted by Sannyasi Arpanmurti, assisted by Prabhat Mantoo, Sanjay Hake, Kumar Sushmaker, Shambhu Kumar, Amit Kumar and Shantanu.

On the 1st July morning, Swamiji inaugurated the Sivananda Balak Ashram and inducted the 21 boys, presenting them with the giving them Guru Poornima prasad, which included a full set of clothing, school and stationary items and toys. Mohan Bhai Shah, the trustee of the Yoga Foundation of Kachch, who will be responsible for running the ashram, explained its aims and objectives. His Highness, the Mahareo Sri Pragmalji III of Kachch, and local MP, Sri Pushdan Garhavi, offered their support to the ashram. Swamiji then conducted havan and chanting of Guru Gayatri with the Acharyas of the Indian Satyananda ashrams: Swami Swaroopananda (Bhubaneshwar), Swami Asheshananda (Raipur), Swami Vajrapani (Chennai), Swami Satyabindu (Sambalpur), Swami Swayambhunath (Rajnandgaon), Swami Shivaraj (Bhimtal) and Swami Bhaktichaitanya (Vijayawada).

In the evening there was satsang by Swamiji on bhakti and seva, a classical Indian dance performance by Sannyasi Kalamurti from Mumbai, and a video projection depicting the life and teachings of Swami Sivananda.

Guru Poornima day, 2nd July, began with havan and chanting of Sivananda Gayatri conducted by Swamiji. Paduka pooja to Swami Sivananda continued throughout the morning.
