Spiritual Life
When we think of a tree, we think of what we see above ground; the trunk and its branches loaded with leaves, flowers and fruit, but at the base, underground and unseen, is the root which nourishes the tree. In our lives sensory, emotional, intellectual, psychic and material experiences are equivalent to the trunk with its branches, leaves, flowers and fruit. The roots represent the human spirit on which we depend for life and strength, and which is buried deep within us, unseen. This human spirit, which nourishes and strengthens, has to be harmonised with the external and manifest experiences. The awareness of spiritual life leads to a profound understanding of the subtle movements of energy and consciousness governing the whole life process. When spiritual life is in harmony with material life the qualities and strengths of the human character, such as willpower, optimism and creativity, become effulgent. To attain this harmony spiritual traditions prescribe sadhana (spiritual practice) which becomes as spontaneous, constant and integral to life as eating, drinking and sleeping. Spiritual life is the awareness of the play of consciousness and energy in material life.
